Cell Phone Radiation

February 23, 2009

I’ve been on the phone A LOT lately and have started to think about what level of radiation I am exposing my head to on a daily basis.  Here is an article from CNN that I found to be very informative and wanted to share with all of you.  Enjoy!

“Healthy on a Budget”

February 17, 2009

With all this talk about the economy, I thought it would be fitting to give you ideas for living healthy on a budget.  This is an easy and healthy way to live, even in times of plenty!

  • Shop at farmer’s markets.
  • Buy meat, eggs, and dairy directly from a local farm if possible.  Go to http://www.westonaprice.org/localchapters/index.html to find a Weston Price chapter leader in your area who should be able to refer you to sources of local food.
  • Learn how to make your own household cleaning and personal care products.  Many websites have info, and now we have our own expert here at the farm – look for articles by Annie on our website in the near future.
  • Buy groceries in bulk through buying clubs.  Your local health food store or a Weston Price chapter leader may be able to refer you to an existing club or help you find out how to start your own.
  • Plant a garden, even if it is only a small pot of herbs grown on the kitchen counter.
  • Make your own meals at home and limit eating out.  If needed, spend a little bit of money on quality storage containers to motivate you to pack food from home instead of going out.  For example, a nice thermal mug that you use for coffee each morning might keep you from stopping at the local coffee shop on your way in to work.

“Ask The Nutritionist” Q & As

February 9, 2009

In late December Marilyn Farms held our first Ask the Nutritionist Webinar with Jessica Forbes, MS CCN.  We had many great questions on a variety of topics including food allergies, blood type diets, bone health, saturated fats, and cholesterol just to name a few.

If you weren’t able to join us live in December, or if you did join us and want to review the information again, you now have the opportunity to download the webinar file and listen to our hour long session of questions and answers. We know you’ll find Ask the Nutritionist chocked full of amazing bits of education and knowledge to help you take continued steps in your journey for health.

Happy listening!

Homemade Deodorant

February 2, 2009

I tend to travel a lot for conferences and have gradually realized that nothing makes me thankful for deodorant like running through the airport at top speed while dragging a carry-on behind me in order to make a connecting flight, and then having to catch my breath on a plane while sitting in a seat that is way too close to my fellow passenger.

Most “normal” deodorants contain aluminum and other scary ingredients, so over the years I have weaned myself from them and opted for more natural deodorants to help lower my overall lifetime exposure to chemicals.  One of my favorites has been the liquid spray deodorant made by Weleda.  The recipe for my knock-off homemade version is below:

2/3 cup rubbing alcohol
1/3 cup purified water
10 drops essential oil, whichever scent you prefer.  I usually use a combination of jasmine, citrus, and peppermint.

Combine all ingredients in a glass jar, cover, and shake well.  Pour into small spray pump bottles for use (these can be purchased at most drug stores).  Will keep indefinitely if stored at room temp or cooler.

Please note that you may go through a “stinky” period while transitioning from normal to natural deodorant, but trust me – this too shall pass.  If any of you out there have found recipes for homemade deodorants that you like please post them in the comments section!
